IPAR Darwin’s therapy services aim to optimise a client’s recovery from an injury or condition. Services include hand therapy, upper limb therapy, oedema management, scar management, home visiting services and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assessments.

Alongside the appropriate therapy services we also provide education to our clients in order to maximise self-management and recovery.

Our Services

Hand Therapy

IPAR Darwin’s hand therapy service is a specialist treatment that focuses on reducing pain and increasing function in hands, arms and shoulders.

Provided by IPAR’s highly qualified and experienced Occupational Therapists, our hand therapy services can assist with conservative treatment or post-operative management of common hand conditions such as:

• Crush injuries
• Mallet fingers
• Tendon injuries
• Metacarpal fractures
• Burns and scar management
• Finger dislocations and fractures
• Arthritic conditions (OA/RA)
• Ligament and soft tissue injuries
• Fingertip injuries and amputations
• Boutonniere and swan-neck deformities
• Thumb injuries and degenerative changes
• Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome
• Nerve injuries, compression lesions
• Overuse injuries, tendonitis, Carpal Tunnel and De Quervain’s
• Wrist fractures, instabilities and dislocations
• Dupuytren’s Contracture – particularly early post-operative range of movement and scar management
• We also assist with the fabrication of custom made dynamic, progressive and static splints

Oedema Management

Our experienced Occupational Therapists are fully trained and accredited in management of oedema.

We offer the following services:

• Assessment
• Compression bandaging and skin care
• Low level laser therapy
• Treatment and management of cording post surgery
• Advice on appropriate activity levels
• Teaching of self-management strategies
• Advice on the prevention and recognition of oedema
• Scar management
• Education on self management and prevention

Scar Management

IPAR can provide advice and measure for compression garments used to flatten, soften and improve the longterm appearance of scarring after burns, trauma and skin grafts.

Occupational Therapy home visiting

Occupational Therapy home visiting services assist people with mobility issues continue to live safely and independently in their own home.

Home visiting services can be utilised for:

• Access and equipment issues
• Wheelchair / scooter assessment
• Falls prevention information and advice
• Pressure care issues
• Minor modifications such as grab rails or major home modifications, such as ramps and bathroom modifications

There are also a range of services to support carers:

• Manual Handling and safe transfer training for carers of disabled family members or those requiring End of Life care in the home
• Equipment to lighten the load of worry, such as personal alarm systems
• Advice on Government (DEP Scheme) and DVA schemes
• Teaching Carers how to move and promote exercise with the disabled
• Falls Prevention Audits

Activities of Daily Living Assessments

An Activities of Daily Living assessment analyses functional performance in the areas of personal self-care and general activities in and around the home.

The aim of an Activities of Daily Living Assessment is to:

  • Maximise one’s ability to be independent
  • Minimise injury/aggravation in the home
  • Assist to reduce periods of incapacity and disability

Our Occupational Therapists meet clients at their homes to review the usual activities of daily living. The assessment would asses one’s ability to undertake the following activities and subsequently provide recommendations on modifications, adaptive equipment or task modification:

  • Cleaning and laundering
  • Cooking and food preparation
  • Gardening
  • Mobility and the ability to transfer (ie getting in and out of bed or up from your chair or sofa)
  • Transport
  • Shopping
  • Management of medications
  • Ability to handle finances
  • Personal care and hygiene

IPAR completes Activities of Daily Living Assessments within the Private Sector, Workers Compensation schemes, DVA and for Medico-legal purposes.
