Veteran and veteran family member careers at IPAR

Did you know that if you have served one day of continuous service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) that you are considered a veteran?

Maybe you prefer to not identify as a veteran and prefer the term ex-service member.

Maybe you are still serving in the ADF as a Reserve member.

Or, maybe you are the partner/spouse or family member of a veteran, ex or current serving ADF member.

IPAR is a proud supporter of veteran, ex and current serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and ADF family member employment and we have made this public commitment to the Veterans’ Employment Program.

At IPAR we provide veteran-friendly supports to assist veterans, ex and current serving ADF members and family members to perform their best in the workplace

Some examples of our supports include:

A structured onboarding program.
Opportunities for individuals to self-identify as a veteran, ex or current serving ADF member or a family member at any time (from recruitment to ongoing employment) so you can access supportive workplace policies.
An open invitation to engage with IPAR’s Veteran Mentoring Program and Career Development opportunities.

Meet our team

IPAR have a dedicated Veteran Experience Manager who not only ensures that the services we provide our veteran clients are veteran-centric and relevant, but also that our veteran, ex and current ADF serving, and family member employees are supported in the workplace at IPAR.

Peta Siggers

National Veteran Experience Manager

Peta Siggers is our National Veteran Experience Manager. Peta is a veteran and the partner of a current serving ADF member.

Peta has qualifications in Health Science, Rehabilitation Counselling, Addiction Studies, Suicidology and Career Development. She is passionate about supporting good mental health and suicide prevention and supporting safe and positive veteran transition.

In her own words: “I followed my father and his father into the Army and served as a Medic for nearly 15 years in a full-time role before spending a couple more years as a reservist. I deployed overseas and supported our Defence personnel at home. During my time in the Army, I was drawn to roles that involved wellbeing and rehabilitation support so after experiencing my own injuries while in service, I commenced my transition pathway with the aim of becoming a Rehabilitation Counsellor and supporting our veteran community. After several years in this role, and with the support of IPAR, I have been able to expand my role to include the development of IPAR’s Veteran Employment Program to support veterans, ex and current serving members and their families in the civilian workforce.”

Rebekah

Rebekah is a Social Worker and a Veteran Services Consultant at IPAR in our Melbourne team. Rebekah is the family member of a veteran and is one of our veteran workplace mentors.

Tricia

Tricia is a Registered Nurse and a Veteran Services Consultant at IPAR in our Morwell, Victoria team. Tricia is the family member of a veteran and is one of our veteran workplace mentors.

Gavin

Gavin is a Registered Psychologist and our National Technical Manager – Veteran Services and is based in Townsville. Gavin is the family member of a veteran is one of our veteran workplace mentors.

Grant

Grant is one of our friendly Talent Acquisition team members who supports our recruitment and interview processes. Grant is also a veteran and is one of our veteran workplace mentors.

IPAR and our ties to the veteran community

IPAR enjoys a formal partnership with Invictus Australia which helps us to strengthen the physical and mental wellbeing of veterans and their families, through the power of sport in their local community. It promotes and encourages all levels of participation, whether that is playing, administration, coaching, officiating or the many volunteering opportunities that make a local sporting club or event tick.

In addition to our partnership with Invictus Australia, IPAR also has close relationships with RSL Queensland, Gallipoli Medical Research, Mates 4 Mates and various local Veterans and Families’ Hubs, RSL Sub-Branches and other ex-service organisations.

External organisations supporting veteran employment:

In addition to the above, IPAR also supports veterans/ex-serving members under rehabilitation supports. This may result in IPAR supporting clients to return to the workplace after transition from the ADF, or recovery from injury or illness via a Work Trial/Host Employment or by employment supports.

IPAR also support partners and spouses of veterans return to work via the RSL Employment Program.

Recruitment and interview support

Candidates are invited to self-identify as a veteran or ex-serving member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). This is so that if you are employed by IPAR you can be provided access to any supports that IPAR have in place for veteran and ex-ADF employees.
Candidates are invited to self-identify as a current ADF reserve member. This is so that if you are employed by IPAR you can be provided access to any supports that IPAR have in place for reservists to complete their ADF days.
Candidates are invited to self-identify as a family member of a veteran/ex or current serving member of the ADF. This is so that if you are employed by IPAR you can be provided access to any supports that IPAR have in place for veteran family member employees.
Candidates are invited to review our Veteran and veteran family member careers at IPAR internet page to review the supports we have in place for veterans and veteran family member employees.

Candidates that self-identify as a veteran, ex or current serving ADF member are provided an interview preparation pack via email to assist you to prepare for your interview with IPAR.
Candidates that self-identify as a veteran, ex or current ADF member are provided the opportunity to request their interview be conducted with a veteran mentor present.
Interviews are conducted using veteran-friendly interview techniques.
If a candidate that has self-identified as a veteran, ex or current ADF member is not successful during the recruitment process, they will be offered an opportunity to receive feedback to improve their application and interview performance in future.

Onboarding support

All new team members will participate in a three-month onboarding program called KickStart, to support you get to know your team, your role and the workplace.
New team members that have self-identified as a veteran are invited to participate in IPAR’s Veteran Mentoring Program if they wish to.

New team members that self-identify as a veteran, ex- or current serving ADF member, or veteran family member are supported by a Team Leader/Manager that has completed the RSL Queensland and Gallipoli Medical Research module: Military Culture and the Workplace so that they have a general understanding of how military culture in the ADF can influence how veterans and ex-serving members interact in the civilian workforce, long after they leave the ADF.

Ongoing support

Access to polices that support retention of employees that self-identify as a veteran, ex or current serving ADF member.
Access to policies that support retention of employees that self-identify as a family member of a veteran, ex or current serving ADF member.
Access to IPAR’s Employment Assistance Program (EAP) or education on how to access veteran and veteran family specific supports.
Team members who self-identify as a veteran, ex or current ADF member will have regular monthly check ins with their Team Leader/Manager, which will culminate in an annual performance review each year.
Team members who self-identify as a veteran, ex or current ADF member are invited to engage in the IPAR Veteran Mentoring Program.

Team members with a lived experience of serving in the ADF or as a family member of a veteran, ex or current serving ADF member are invited to be part of our Veteran Advisory Board (VAB), a team of IPAR employees that meet quarterly to discuss:
1. Relevant information from the veteran community and how this can impact our service delivery.
2. Collaboration and co-design ways/products/services to ensure our service provision is veteran centric.
3. Discuss IPAR policy and co-design programs to support veterans and veteran family members in the workplace.
